Fences in Stoneham

Stoneham sits about nine miles north of downtown Boston. It became its own town on December 17, 1725, when it split off from Charlestown, and during the Industrial Revolution it grew into a major shoe-making center. The Old Burying Ground on Pleasant and William Streets dates to 1726 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Spot Pond, inside the Middlesex Fells Reservation, is almost entirely within Stoneham. The Stone Zoo, founded in 1905, is here too. The Tri-Community Greenway path runs through town, too. Stoneham borders our home base in Winchester, so Carmen can come walk your yard with you and talk through what makes sense for your lot.

The Middlesex Fells covers roughly the southern third of town, and Stoneham's land is generally rolling hills, with Bear Hill, in the Fells, as the high point at 311 feet. The town's open space plan (PDF) says most of Stoneham's terrain comes from bedrock very near or at the surface, and some upland areas have significant rock outcrops, so it helps to know where ledge is before the posts go in. Older houses from the late 1800s and early 1900s tend to sit near the town center, including the Nobility Hill Historic District west of it, while almost half of Stoneham's homes were built between 1960 and 2000.

A fence in Stoneham usually has a few jobs: privacy from the neighbors, a safe yard for kids and dogs, and a clean property line. On a corner lot, it also has to keep a driver's view of the intersection clear. The town's rules are below.

Have a pool? Stoneham's zoning bylaw calls for a 6-foot fence and a self-locking gate around it. We build pool enclosures, and aluminum is a popular pick around pools.

Before you build

Stoneham fence rules

Here is what the Town of Stoneham's own web pages and zoning bylaw say about fences, in plain words. Rules can change, so confirm with the town before you build.

  • Permits. The town's website doesn't spell out when a fence needs a permit, so ask the Stoneham Building Department before you build. The department takes its applications online.
  • Height and setbacks. A note in the town's zoning table says fences 6 feet tall or less are excluded from the front, side, and rear setback rules. Anything taller isn't covered by that exception, so ask the Building Department first.
  • Corner lots. In the Residence A and B districts, nothing over 3½ feet tall, including fences, walls, and plantings, may go in the part of a corner lot's front yard within 20 feet of where the two streets meet, if it would block a driver's view of the intersection.
  • Pools. The zoning bylaw says in-ground and above-ground pools must be enclosed by a 6-foot fence with a self-locking gate. The Building Department's FAQ says pool gates must be self-closing and self-latching, and it points to the 2015 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code.
  • Near wetlands. The town's wetlands guide says you need Conservation Commission permission for work within 100 feet of a swamp, marsh, forested wetland, or intermittent stream, within 200 feet of a vernal pool, pond, or year-round stream, or in the 100-year flood zone. Conservation Commission: (781) 279-2696.
  • Where to ask. Stoneham Building Department, 35 Central Street, Garden Level, Stoneham, (781) 279-2670. Open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday 8 a.m. to noon.

Are there extra fence rules on a corner lot in Stoneham?

Yes. Do you do repairs in Stoneham, and what does an estimate cost?

Yes. Besides building new fences, we fix damaged ones. Estimates cost nothing, and Carmen, the owner, comes out for every one himself. The work is done by our own crew, we are fully insured, and every installation has a 5-year labor warranty. On a new fence job, we take the old fence down and haul it away. Call (781) 369-1703.

How soon can you start?

We can usually start within one to two weeks. During the busy season, expect three to four weeks, so it helps to get on our spring list early.
